I’m thrilled to share with you my latest venture – an online shop connecting families to nature!

I’ve always loved the idea of having an ecommerce site, but never really been sure what I would sell, or what the niche would be.

It was actually my mum, Sue Thomas, a published author and former university professor, who came up with the idea for The Kids’ Nature Shop. Her most recent book, Technobiophilia, explores the balance between nature, technology and wellbeing. During her research she found lots of articles about getting the kids back outside and in to nature, but she noticed that there didn’t seem to be many websites offering products to help. We had spotted a gap in the market, and we knew this could potentially be a very popular subject. So we had our niche, but the next challenge was working out which platform to use.

Over the years that I have been running my own businesses I have been an Amazon Associate, utilizing affiliate links for books etc on my websites, and I have read about people setting up businesses purely around this, for example the blog I featured in July about the Legal Accountant Turned Mosquito Nets Seller.

We did some research and discovered Fresh Store Builder, the worlds’ most advanced Amazon store builder. Fresh Store Builder started in 2010 and now in 2016 has helped over 20,000 people create unique Amazon affiliate stores. Without needing stock or investment, the stores are a great way to get started with making an online income.

It was incredibly exciting to find software completely set up for running an Amazon Associates store, and we decided this was going to be the right vehicle for The Kids’ Nature Shop.

My mum and I have very different ways of working, and while I was very confident in building websites with Wix, my mum has always used Wordpress, so already we had quite different technical skills. It would be possible to use Fresh Store Builder without being very tech savvy, you would just need to stick to the basic templates, but with my mum’s knowledge of writing code, it did mean we were able to stretch the boundaries and make the site a little more individual.

And of course working with your own mum is a whole different ball game, but luckily we have coped very well so far!

Our mission for The Kids’ Nature Shop is to offer ideas and inspiration to parents of how they can educate and encourage their kids to interact with nature. Whether it’s spotting birds, bugs and spiders; growing giant sunflowers; or learning how to stargaze, our carefully-selected products will spark your imagination.

The opportunities to grow the store are endless and we plan to expand to other countries in the near future (it’s currently only linked to Amazon UK). With the software you can also build unlimited shops so we are already thinking about what our next niche could be!

Please do take a look and share with your friends and family if you like it!

I would love to hear your own stories of setting up an online store, email me at hello@makingmumpreneurs.com

  • The Cocoon was a vital support to me as I got ready to launch my business. Everyone is so supportive and keen to help, not just the panel members (who are great!) but all the members as well. There’s a real feeling of ‘sisterhood’ on there, with mutual encouragement and bags of useful advice and support. Through the Cocoon I was guided through the decision of whether to set up Amazing Futures as a limited company or as a Sole Trader.

I also received crucial advice in setting up contracts and financial systems.I love the monthly training calls, have just enjoyed the PR masterclass and feel that it’s a very low cost way to keep up your knowledge and learning. It’s a cosy environment where you feel comfortable posting any sort of questions relating to your business. Highly recommended!

  • I joined The Cocoon because one of the things I've really struggled with since setting up my own business and working from home are the feelings of isolation. I am a really social creature and although I am loving being an entrepreneur there are just times that I'd like to chat to people and ask advice, especially from women in the same situation as me. Since joining I've loved the fact the environment is so supportive, Erin incredibly knowledgeable as are the resident experts. I now feel that I get the best of both worlds, I am able to enjoy all the things that are amazing about working for myself from home safe in the knowledge if I come up against a stumbling block I can ask the ladies in The Cocoon for help. I can't recommend it highly enough - join up as soon as you can!
