I am a list maker. I LOVE writing lists, it makes me feel in control of what I need to do, and satisfied when I can tick things off. However, as a small business owner, the list never ends….there is always something more you can be doing to further your business, generate more sales, attract more customers. As the years go on I am getting much better at embracing the bottomless list of to do’s.

I have several lists, some on paper, some on my phone, some in a word document. I’m currently using a great free app on my mobile called Wunderlist, where you can have multiple lists like Work, Family, Groceries. I know a lot of people who also swear by Evernote and Gtasks to help keep them organised.

My to do list is like an iceberg, and every day I chip away a bit more. I have to accept that I will never conquer the whole iceberg, and it will never melt. Some days I may be too tired to chip away at full force, but other days I may have all the right tools and energy I need to make a big dent.

It’s similar to the quote about when you die, your email inbox will still be full.  We can only do so much in a day, week, month a

nd we have to set realistic targets, especially when we are juggling work and raising children.

If you feel overwhelmed by how much you need to do on a day to day basis, Time Management tactics can be super helpful. Sign up to the Making Mumpreneurs newsletter to receive a free Time Management Guide for Busy People by Shelley Henderson, which is full of tips and strategies that you can implement straight away.

Preparation is the key to being productive, as Abraham Lincoln once said:

“Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.”

  • The Cocoon was a vital support to me as I got ready to launch my business. Everyone is so supportive and keen to help, not just the panel members (who are great!) but all the members as well. There’s a real feeling of ‘sisterhood’ on there, with mutual encouragement and bags of useful advice and support. Through the Cocoon I was guided through the decision of whether to set up Amazing Futures as a limited company or as a Sole Trader.

I also received crucial advice in setting up contracts and financial systems.I love the monthly training calls, have just enjoyed the PR masterclass and feel that it’s a very low cost way to keep up your knowledge and learning. It’s a cosy environment where you feel comfortable posting any sort of questions relating to your business. Highly recommended!

  • I joined The Cocoon because one of the things I've really struggled with since setting up my own business and working from home are the feelings of isolation. I am a really social creature and although I am loving being an entrepreneur there are just times that I'd like to chat to people and ask advice, especially from women in the same situation as me. Since joining I've loved the fact the environment is so supportive, Erin incredibly knowledgeable as are the resident experts. I now feel that I get the best of both worlds, I am able to enjoy all the things that are amazing about working for myself from home safe in the knowledge if I come up against a stumbling block I can ask the ladies in The Cocoon for help. I can't recommend it highly enough - join up as soon as you can!
