It is now one whole year since I launched the Making Mumpreneurs website! What a year it has been. I'm feeling reflective today.
The idea of Making Mumpreneurs was born whilst my family and I were living an expat life in Abu Dhabi. The opportunity had come out of the blue, and not wanting to have any regrets, we decided to take a calculated risk and try it out.
The excitement and stress in the run up to leaving the UK was overwhelming, not least because we were already in the process of moving from London to Bournemouth, so it was already a time of huge change, without throwing an overseas trip in to the mix!
I shed many tears in the weeks beforehand, felt incredibly anxious and even had a few panic attacks, but overall we were filled with happy anticipation of what we would find in this new life in the Middle East.
On arriving at our hotel at 9pm after a 7 hour flight with two overtired and excited children, my eldest trapped his finger in the wardrobe door and screamed the whole place down. We had to have the first-aider come to the room, but of course there's not much you can do for a squashed finger. And to be honest that laid the foundation for what would be an incredibly stressful first few weeks, living in a hotel, getting used to a new culture, Ollie starting a new pressurised international school, and my husband starting a new job.
Things did get better when we moved in to our own apartment, but to be honest the gut feeling in my stomach that I didn't want to be there just didn't go away...
Once the kids were settled in school and nursery I instantly felt a bit lost. I wasn't used to having nothing to do. Back in London I had actively built a community around me, and I loved walking down the street and seeing familiar faces, and keeping busy with my small businesses.
I decided to throw myself in to learning more about Digital Marketing, and I joined The Six Figure Mentors training programme. It was exactly what I needed to give myself some purpose. It dawned on me that all the businesses I had built so far had been about
local community, and now being 5,000 miles away, that wasn't going to work for me!
I needed to build a business that was purely online, and I also wanted to continue my passion of working with other mums running their own businesses. I started creating Making Mumpreneurs, with the aim of sharing the information I had found about creating online businesses, and connecting like minded entrepreneurial women from across the world.
In the last year Making Mumpreneurs has been my saviour in many ways. It's been my constant. After 7 months we made the hard decision to accept that the expat life was not for us (which in all honestly, felt like we had 'failed'), we moved back to the UK a few months later and had to re-settle the kids in a new school, make new friends and build a new life for ourselves. I have found great comfort in going online and working on the website and engaging in the wonderfully friendly Making Mumpreneurs Facebook community.
Now we are settled very happily in Bournemouth, living in our 'forever home' and growing roots. This month, to celebrate the website's first birthday, I launched The Cocoon, which has always been my vision for Making Mumpreneurs - an online space which offers real value for mumpreneurs, combining fresh content through master classes and interviews, with a safe place to share our challenges and celebrate our successes.
I am hugely proud of what I have achieved with Making Mumpreneurs over the last year, despite adversity, and I hope that my story will help inspire others to keep going with their businesses, even when times are tough. I cannot think of anything more empowering than knowing that you have built your own business, that you are creating your own economy, and that you are being an incredible role model for your children.
Happy Birthday Making Mumpreneurs, and I look forward to celebrating again next year!
