Investing in yourself and taking an online course might feel like just another thing to do on your to do list, but in reality, the benefits of taking some time to get your brain whirring are huge.

The popularity of online courses has risen dramatically over the last few years, not only due to the incredible variety of subjects and options available. Online courses can be a lot more affordable than attending a college, and the added benefit of being able to take the course in the comfort of your own home makes it an attractive option for mums.

If you are considering starting your own business but need to polish your skills, you can find every topic under the sun online - website building, twitter strategy, training to become a virtual assistant, building an online store, digital marketing, SEO...the list goes on.

Here are just a few more reasons why taking an online course is a great step forward:

Becoming a mum undoubtedly affects how we feel as career women, whether that’s positively or negatively. While I know many professional women who have children and continue to hold down high level careers (and I take my hat off to them!), there is a shockingly high percentage of women who don’t return to their previous jobs. 70% of women who leave the workforce to have children struggle to return because they find it impossible to combine their career and family life. Three quarters feel there is just not enough flexibility.

How has becoming a mum changed your feelings about work? Perhaps you are desperate to get back and continue your previous role. Perhaps you are unsure how you will juggle the hours and childcare. Perhaps you have lost the passion for what you once did, and are looking for a new challenge. If the latter is true, now is the time to re-assess.

Build Confidence

It is never too late to learn new skills, and by taking an online course you can work at your own pace and in your own home, or in fact from anywhere! You may love the idea of a digital business for example, but don’t feel tech savvy enough – don’t let that put you off, all the tools you need are available and you will be amazed how quickly you build your skill set.

You will not be alone – a recent report showed that 1 in 12 new mums are already running post-baby companies across the UK and a further one in five (21 per cent) millennial mums expect to be their own boss in the next five years.

The world really is your oyster. This is a new chapter of your life, you don’t have to do what you’ve always done. You are perfectly capable of becoming your own boss. Everything you need to build a successful business is at your fingertips (or should I say at a click of a mouse!)

There are so many opportunities to work digitally from home, and not having to commute to an office is honestly blissful. It doesn't have to be lonely either, there are entrepreneurial networking groups all over the country so you can still enjoy face to face interaction!

Losing confidence and losing yourself can often be an unwanted by-product of having children. Sometimes all you need is a helping hand to get back on your feet, and show you that you have options. That’s what I am here to do.

If I can do it, you can do it!

  • The Cocoon was a vital support to me as I got ready to launch my business. Everyone is so supportive and keen to help, not just the panel members (who are great!) but all the members as well. There’s a real feeling of ‘sisterhood’ on there, with mutual encouragement and bags of useful advice and support. Through the Cocoon I was guided through the decision of whether to set up Amazing Futures as a limited company or as a Sole Trader.

I also received crucial advice in setting up contracts and financial systems.I love the monthly training calls, have just enjoyed the PR masterclass and feel that it’s a very low cost way to keep up your knowledge and learning. It’s a cosy environment where you feel comfortable posting any sort of questions relating to your business. Highly recommended!

  • I joined The Cocoon because one of the things I've really struggled with since setting up my own business and working from home are the feelings of isolation. I am a really social creature and although I am loving being an entrepreneur there are just times that I'd like to chat to people and ask advice, especially from women in the same situation as me. Since joining I've loved the fact the environment is so supportive, Erin incredibly knowledgeable as are the resident experts. I now feel that I get the best of both worlds, I am able to enjoy all the things that are amazing about working for myself from home safe in the knowledge if I come up against a stumbling block I can ask the ladies in The Cocoon for help. I can't recommend it highly enough - join up as soon as you can!
